Can I use my own car even if it’s worth more than £250?

YYes you can use any road-legal car. However you will not be eligible for any of the prizes (except the prize for most money raised) if you participate in any vehicle purchased for more than £250.

Do I need insurance for my banger?

Insurance is mandatory. The easiest way to get cover is to transfer your existing car insurance (or that of one of your team) onto the banger. However if you do not currently have a car you will have to take out a separate policy.

Can I sell my car when I am finished on the Tour?

Yes you can. The car belongs to you. You can do whatever you want with it. There are legends of people who have actually made a profit…

I don't want to drive my car home and I don’t want to sell it — where can I get rid of it?

Do not leave your car by the roadside or in the airport car park. We can assist you with scrapping in Cabo da Roca, however, you will have to have the correct documents and you will be expected to drive the car to the specific dump yourselves. All the information with regard to scrapping is contained in your event guide.

How long is it going to take me?

The simple answer is 4 days, however, if your looking for specifics then it’s difficult to say. It depends on the state of your car, how fast you drive, the route you take and whether you get lost, however, we think it takes anywhere between 22 and 30 hours if you drove solidly.

Where Is Cabo da Roca?

It’s the most westerly point in Europe and is about 15 minutes away from downtown Lisbon. It’s also the best windsurfing beach in Europe and one of the most stunning places in Portugal.

Is it a race, can I break the speed limit?

No it is not a race, and no you cannot break the speed limit.

What am I fundraising for, what does Gemin-i.org do?

Gemin-i.org is a UK registered charity that uses IT to solve problems in education and development. There’s loads of information about the charity, it’s origins and its current work on our website www.gemin-i.org. If you need to reel off a quick explanation to your sponsors, you could try the following:

“I’m raising money for a UK charity that helps children and young people around the world talk to each other about issues that are important to them. In doing so they break down cultural, religious and social barriers. In essence they get people talking to each other so that in later life they are less inclined to enact violence against other religions, cultures or states.”

Or

“I’m raising money for a charity that gets people in places such as Palestine talking to people in Israel, trying to bring about understanding and bring an end to the violence.

Or (if you must)

“I’m raising money for a charity that promotes ‘Jaw-Jaw rather than War-War’”

How much do I have to fundraise?

£1000 per team.

Can I drive it by myself?

No. You must have at least 2 drivers. This is for safety. We don’t want you falling asleep at the wheel or ploughing into someone because you were too busy reading a map.

Why do I need a mobile phone?

Basically, so we can check you’re OK and also for you to let us know if you’ve got lost etc. We will also send you text updates as the event is on.

Should we bring tents or can we stay in proper accommodation?

The choice is yours really. Tents will be cheaper and arguably more of an adventure, but regular accommodation (bungalows on campsite and hostels) are very nice and pretty reasonable.

Is the registration price £100 per person or per team?

The registration fee is £100 per team

What happens if we don’t raise the full amount?

In the unlikely event you don’t raise enough money, you can spend up to a month after the event fundraising in arrears, but this is very unlikely to happen.
