The History of Gemin-i.org

Africa Bookcase (the previous name for Gemin-i.org) was founded in 1997 by Henry Warren and Marsha Catchpole, both of whom had visited Africa during their year out before university. The charity was founded with the core aims of facilitating education in the developing world and providing a basis for continued multilateral & bilateral aid through the promotion of development awareness in UK schools

What we do

Gemin-i offer innovative solutions to improve education in the developing and developed worlds. As an organisation we work at bridging cultural, religious and digital divides between disparate people around the world. We also specialise in using technology to give a voice to those who rarely have one, raising their concerns with policy makers and ensuring they are adequately represented. We want to instigate conversation, breaking down cultural myths and stereotypes in order to reduce conflict (of which there are too many current examples) and promote peace and understanding (which we feel is at an all time low).

Our Values

As an organisation we believe in:

  • The capacity of innovative ICT usage to empower, enthuse, educate and bridge the digital divide.
  • Avoiding conflict by dispelling cultural myths and stereotypes through communication.
  • The value of young people's voices and their capacity to bring about change.
  • The potential of multilateral online communities.
  • Working with other organisations rather than in competition with them.
  • The value of learning by doing

“The sharing of viewpoints is invaluable as it fosters critical thinking and an empathy for others. It also addresses some misconceptions on both sides of the development divide, and allows for the sharing of ideas and an exchange of ideas on lifestyle. The students felt they could give first hand response to the potential that remains untapped in Africa, and they could act as ambassadors for the continent.”

— Llewellyn King, Teacher, South Africa

“It is indeed a good project, this is the first time I have been ever asked to give an opinion.”

— Student, Kenya

“For the first time my students touched computers and knew what internet means. They got to know what other pupils are like around the world and most critical is the self awareness that they have gained. They now look at the world differently and are more aware of their rights than ever before.”

— Mr. Aduda, Teacher, Kenya
